You did not mention if any of your human neighbor’s lost their lives, so I hope not.

The devastation from a flood caused the permanent closing of the Girl Scout camp I grew up at and first worked at. It breaks my heart. I can imagine you feel similarly about your bees and your neighbor’s’ loss of property.

The px of the scrambled hives made me want to cry. Amazing to have one hive survive. I hope they are still OK in May!

I can’t believe that the one hive survived and even ended up on a new hive stand. If you need donations to help with the acquisition of new bees let us know.
Is it inappropriate to say “Happy New Year”?

Hi Tom
Well, to be honest, I am having some trouble with the system. The premise of it is sound and most of the engineering is good, but it’s having trouble handling the massive amount of data that is coming out of 8 sensors at once. When i tested it with one or two, it worked OK. But bear in mind that the system is still in beta testing, so some of the software has “rough edges” and is not as user-friendly as would be ideal. If you are a techie then you would probably do fine with it, but if you aren’t comfortable with a little backend work on the computer side, you may want to wait.

Winter has finally set in here in the Great Lakes area. Wondering how the bee monitoring system is working out and are you getting any usable data from it? Is the data the system gathers getting transmitted to your host computer properly? What distances are you getting? I want to install them in my hives and I am going to set up a remote 2 or 3 hive apiary and would like Your feedback before I commit my bucks to the technology. I like the off the grid setup you built……I would appreciate Your input. Thank You in advance. Tom K.

I am glad you contacted Bob. The equipment is good so far, but i will be honest, it’s still beta testing… meaning that it still has bugs and hiccups, and the interface is not yet “polished” and user friendly. Much like owning a ’71 volkswagen bus, it’s fun but there is a lot of maintenance and fidgeting required that you wouldn’t need to do on a new Honda. I’m working with bob to streamline a lot of that stuff, but it’s a work in progress. He has been really good about sending me software patches and so forth when I find bugs.
If you’re OK with that, then by all means, please use this system. It will be great to have more beekeepers field testing it, so that it gets better and can go primetime at some point. That will be good for ALL beekeepers.
As for the solar power, that’s something I invented to go with the system, and we don’t have an off-the-shelf solution for sale. But what I could do is maybe put together a white paper on how I did mine, and you could interpret that into a system that works for you.

(My 2 Hives) The equipment your using seems to be the answer to my needs. I have contacted the guy at Bee Certain about the hardware. Im very interested in the data you have gathered, performance of the system, including the solar interface, and your opinion of its value in your research. My original need was to monitor weight reliably but inclusion of the temp. and humidity really sounds interesting. Thanks for your time in advance…

Looking forward to “finished” interior pics.
